The Crash Reel, a new documentary film by Oscar-nominated director Lucy Walker, follows the story of elite US snowboarder, Kevin Pearce, who sustained a horrific brain injury just weeks before he was due to compete in the 2010 Winter Olympics.

The film takes on a special resonance in Canada, debuting on the heels of the class-action suit in which NHL players are suing the league for allegedly hiding the risks of concussions.

Walker’s work with Pearce prompted her to launch the LoveYourBrain campaign targeted at raising awareness for young athletes about the dangers of traumatic brain injuries and the importance of both helmets and insurance.

The documentary has been shortlisted for the 2014 Oscars.
